Daredevil (2003)

THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

The 2003 Daredevil film has aged better than its reputation allows. Ben Affleck's Matt Murdock is more convincing in the courtroom scenes than the action sequences, but the film's willingness to engage with the character's Catholicism and moral ambiguity gave it a texture that most superhero films of the era avoided. Colin Farrell's Bullseye is knowingly cartoonish in a way that works, and Jennifer Garner's Elektra is underwritten but gestures at the character's complexity. The director's cut corrects several of the theatrical version's structural problems and is the definitive way to watch it. Imperfect, and more worthwhile than its legacy suggests.

Daredevil (2003) sits in Marvel's pre-MCU or non-MCU screen legacy, adapting comic-book characters through a separate continuity. It connects Marvel's larger history of heroes, antiheroes, and experiments in genre storytelling before the modern shared universe became dominant. Its placement helps viewers understand this title as part of the wider Marvel xVERSE without treating it as core MCU canon.
