Supergirl
July 1, 1984 in theaters
Kara Zor-El leaves the hidden Kryptonian colony of Argo City and travels to Earth to recover a stolen power source, only to clash with a sorceress who plans to weaponize it. The 1984 film is the first solo theatrical outing for Superman's cousin and the earliest live-action Supergirl feature release.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The 1984 Supergirl film is a production that suffered from the same mid-franchise fatigue affecting the Superman series while also carrying the additional burden of introducing a new lead in a genre that had not yet figured out how to center women in superhero stories. Helen Slater brings genuine warmth and physical grace to Kara, and her performance is the film's most consistent asset. The villain's plan involves a mystic power object and a love spell, which situates the film more in fairy-tale register than superhero convention. The theatrical cut lacks the connective tissue of longer versions, and the result is a film with memorable elements assembled around an incomplete narrative architecture.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story

Supergirl belongs to DC's legacy Superman screen history, separate from the modern DCU and DCEU continuities. It connects the broader mythology of Kryptonian heroism, human identity, and public responsibility with an earlier era of comic-book adaptation. Its placement helps viewers trace how Superman-related stories evolved across film and television before today's connected-universe approach.
