THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A film that works in spite of itself — the Venom-Eddie Brock dynamic is genuinely odd in a way that produces more laughs than the script earns through craft, and Tom Hardy's committed physical performance holds the thing together through sequences that have no business working. The villain is forgettable and the plot is thin, but the film's sheer tonal weirdness gives it a personality the more polished Sony Marvel entries lacked. It's not a good film by conventional measures, but it has a stranger appeal than most of its peers. Worth watching for Hardy, and for a version of a superhero film that arrived fully convinced it was doing something right.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Venom sits in Sony's Spider-Man-adjacent live-action universe, a branch that explores characters connected to Spider-Man mythology outside the core MCU path. It connects antiheroes, villains, and side-corners of Marvel lore with a separate continuity focused on darker or stranger character arcs. Its placement helps viewers distinguish this lane from MCU Spider-Man and the animated Spider-Verse.
