The Phantom

THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

The Phantom is a period adventure that takes its 1930s pulp source material seriously — a choice that distinguishes it from most of its mid-1990s superhero contemporaries and also limits its mainstream appeal. Billy Zane's Kit Walker is earnest and physically committed, and the Bengalla setting gives the film a distinct adventure-serial texture that the genre rarely attempted at the time. The plot is functional adventure-serial mechanics and the villain is adequate rather than memorable. Assessed in its proper context as a faithful adaptation of a legacy pulp property rather than a modern franchise entry, it is a more accomplished film than its commercial performance suggested.

The Phantom sits within DC's broader screen legacy, outside the main modern connected continuities. It connects a specific character or comic-book lane with the long history of DC adaptations before shared universes became the default model. Its placement helps viewers understand this title as part of the wider DC xVERSE archive rather than a direct step in the DCEU or DCU timeline.
