Werewolf by Night

THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

Marvel's most formally distinctive release — a black-and-white horror special presentation that commits fully to its Universal Monsters homage and doesn't apologize for being exactly what it is. At 52 minutes it operates at the right scale for the premise: long enough to establish character and atmosphere, short enough to avoid the third-act bloat that undermines most of the franchise's longer entries. Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly are well-matched, and the practical-leaning effects give it a texture the franchise's CGI spectacles can't replicate. The most creatively confident thing Marvel released in 2022, and evidence that the franchise works best when it's given permission to be strange.
