What If...? — Season 1

THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

What If...? translates the comic book format's greatest strength — infinite premise flexibility — into an animated anthology that ranges from genuinely moving to playfully absurd. The animation style is bold and distinctive, and several episodes achieve things the live-action films couldn't: the Doctor Strange grief episode is devastating, and the Zombie episode commits to its genre premise without apology. Not every installment earns its runtime, and the season finale's team-up strains the anthology format. But the project's ambition is largely vindicated, and it expands the multiverse's emotional vocabulary in ways the main timeline rarely attempts.

What If Season 1 sits in the MCU's Phase 4, using animation to explore alternate outcomes across familiar Marvel stories. It connects multiverse possibility, character variation, and branching timelines with the franchise's growing interest in realities beyond the main path. Its placement helps viewers understand how animated entries can widen the MCU's scope without functioning like standard live-action sequels.
