Deadpool 2

THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

A louder and more crowded film than the original, which is both the point and the problem — the ensemble additions dilute what made the first film work, and the jokes arrive at a higher volume without a proportional increase in wit. Cable is a better addition than the X-Force gag suggests, and Josh Brolin plays the straight-man role with enough commitment to give the chaos something to bounce off. The emotional core — Deadpool's grief and his relationship with Russell — is more sincere than the film's tone suggests, and the film earns its ending. A diminishing return that's still funnier than most of what surrounds it.
