THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The MCU's most deliberate origin film and one of its most confident — Joe Johnston builds a period war film that earns its earnestness rather than undercutting it with irony. Chris Evans makes Steve Rogers work because he plays the ideology straight, and the film trusts that choice. The HYDRA-versus-the-Allies structure gives the action sequences a clarity the franchise often lacks, and the final act sacrifice lands because the film has done the character work to earn it. The weakest section is the montage in the middle, but it's a minor flaw in a film that gets the fundamentals exactly right.
