The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
November 25, 2022 on Disney+
Mantis and Drax travel to Earth on a mission to find the perfect Christmas gift for Peter Quill: his childhood hero Kevin Bacon. The 2022 Disney+ special is a brief comedic detour between Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians Vol. 3, notable for revealing that Mantis is Quill's half-sister.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
James Gunn's Guardians Holiday Special is exactly what it intends to be: a warm, irreverent, and affectionately stupid 44 minutes of Marvel comfort food. Drax and Mantis's journey to kidnap Kevin Bacon is a one-joke premise that the special commits to with full sincerity, and the result is funnier than it has any right to be. It's also quietly poignant — Quill's relationship to Christmas, his mother, and the family he's built is handled with the same emotional intelligence that made the main trilogy work. Not essential viewing, but a genuinely good time for anyone already invested in these characters.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special belongs to Marvel's wider screen history, outside a single clean continuity unless the record clearly connects it to the MCU. It adapts familiar Marvel characters through its own branch of superhero, fantasy, or action storytelling. Its placement helps viewers understand how this title fits the broader Marvel xVERSE while keeping separate continuities from being blended together.
