The Batman
March 1, 2022 in theaters
In only his second year as Gotham's vigilante, Batman's investigation of a serial killer targeting the city's elite exposes decades of corruption reaching into Gotham's most powerful institutions — and into his own family history. Matt Reeves' take reimagines the character as a detective first, with Gotham's systemic rot as the central subject.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The Batman is the most cinematically serious treatment of the character since The Dark Knight — a three-hour noir procedural that uses the detective aspect of Batman's mythology more rigorously than any prior adaptation. Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne is deliberately unglamorous: anxious, obsessive, and not yet the composed figure other films assume, which makes the growth across the film meaningful rather than decorative. The Riddler's horror-adjacent characterization and the film's interest in Gotham as a structurally corrupt system give it a thematic density most superhero films avoid. Long but earned, and the best-argued case for what a self-contained Batman film can be.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
The Batman begins Matt Reeves's separate Gotham saga, focusing on Bruce Wayne as an early-career detective in a corrupt and rain-soaked city. It connects Batman's crime-fighting mythology with a grounded noir approach that stands apart from the DCEU and DCU. Its placement helps viewers follow this modern Batman branch as an Elseworlds-style continuity built around Gotham itself.
