THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Black Adam is a franchise-launch vehicle that spends so much energy establishing its anti-hero's mythology that it forgets to give him a compelling arc within it. Dwayne Johnson commits to the character's physicality and moral rigidity, and the action sequences are technically accomplished. The Justice Society's introduction scatters the film's focus, the villain is underdeveloped, and the screenplay's attempts at thematic weight — oppression, power, liberation — never develop beyond their premise. The mid-credits scene is the film's most discussed element, which is its own form of verdict. A well-resourced production in search of a story worth telling at its scale.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Black Adam sits within the modern DC connected-film era, where heroes, antiheroes, and government forces begin reshaping the public world. It connects individual character arcs with the larger consequences of metahumans becoming visible across the planet. Its placement helps viewers follow the DCEU-era continuity while recognizing how each title adds a different corner to DC's screen mythology.
