Joker
October 1, 2019 in theaters
Set in a grimy, economically fractured Gotham City in the early 1980s, the film traces the mental and social unraveling of Arthur Fleck — a troubled aspiring comedian whose descent into violence gives rise to the anarchic criminal known as the Joker. The film operates as a standalone character study outside the main DC continuity.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Joker is a character study that borrows the visual grammar of 1970s prestige cinema to tell a story about the making of a symbol — and the result is more honest about its own provocations than most superhero films dare to be. Joaquin Phoenix's performance is a sustained act of controlled decomposition: every choice is calibrated, and the film gives him room to inhabit Arthur Fleck's degradation without editorializing it. Whether the film endorses, critiques, or simply observes what it depicts is a genuine interpretive question it leaves productively open. A landmark DC film that works entirely on its own terms, and one that probably could not have been made under a tighter franchise mandate.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Joker sits in a standalone Elseworlds-style DC continuity, separate from Batman team-up films and the larger DCU. It connects Gotham mythology with a character-study approach focused on social collapse, identity, and performance rather than superhero spectacle. Its placement helps viewers understand DC's ability to tell alternate, self-contained stories around familiar icons and villains.
