THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The Dark Knight is the film that permanently altered the cultural register available to superhero cinema — a crime thriller of genuine formal ambition that uses the Batman mythology as a framework for investigating the limits of moral absolutism under pressure. Heath Ledger's Joker is a performance so completely realized that the film's own structure bends around it, and the film earns that accommodation: every scene with the character changes the shape of what follows. Christian Bale's Batman is most effective when the film treats him as a man rather than an icon, which it does more often than it is credited for. One of the defining films of its decade, superhero or otherwise.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
The Dark Knight belongs to Christopher Nolan's self-contained Dark Knight Trilogy, a grounded Batman continuity separate from the wider DC team-up films. It connects Bruce Wayne's mission with Gotham's corruption, fear, and moral tests through a realistic crime-drama lens. Its placement helps viewers follow this Batman arc as its own complete saga rather than part of a larger superhero timeline.
