Batman Forever
June 9, 1995 in theaters
Batman faces off against two foes: the schizophrenic, horribly scarred former District Attorney Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, and the Riddler, a disgruntled ex-Wayne Enterprises inventor seeking revenge against his former employer by unleashing his brain-sucking weapon on Gotham City's residents. As the caped crusader also copes with tortured memories of his parents' murder, he has a new romance, with psychologist Chase Meridian.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Batman Forever marks the transition between Tim Burton's expressionist Gotham and the full neon excess of its successor — a film caught between two aesthetic registers that never fully commits to either. Val Kilmer's Bruce Wayne is the most emotionally available version of the character in the franchise, and the psychological subplot about his parents' death is more earnestly pursued than the film's tone can sustain. Jim Carrey's Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones's Two-Face are both operating at maximum volume, which is entertaining in isolation and exhausting in combination. More functional than Batman & Robin and less distinctive than Batman Returns — a transitional film that earns that description.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Batman Forever belongs to the Burton-Schumacher Batman film lineage, an earlier theatrical continuity centered on Gotham's stylized heroes and villains. It connects Batman's screen evolution with a more gothic, comic-book approach that shaped how audiences saw the character before modern shared universes. Its placement helps viewers separate this legacy branch from Nolan, Reeves, and DCU Batman stories.
