Hulk
June 19, 2003 in theaters
Scientist Bruce Banner carries suppressed childhood trauma that gamma radiation forces to the surface as the Hulk. Ang Lee's 2003 film prioritizes psychological depth and father-son conflict over spectacle — a stylistically distinctive pre-MCU take on the character that stands apart from the later MCU continuity.

Eric Bana bulked up 25 pounds for the role but the Hulk was entirely CGI.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Ang Lee's Hulk is the superhero film that tried hardest to be something other than a superhero film — and paid for it commercially while earning a more complicated legacy with time. The panel-transition editing, the Freudian father-son framework, and Eric Bana's introverted Banner are elements of a genuinely ambitious art film caught inside a blockbuster release. The pacing is deliberate to a fault and the third act collapses into an abstract confrontation the film's own logic cannot fully support. But the attempt was real, the suppressed-rage psychology of Banner has never been taken more seriously, and the film deserves more credit than its box office suggested. A flawed curiosity worth revisiting.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Hulk sits in Marvel's pre-MCU or non-MCU screen legacy, adapting comic-book characters through a separate continuity. It connects Marvel's larger history of heroes, antiheroes, and experiments in genre storytelling before the modern shared universe became dominant. Its placement helps viewers understand this title as part of the wider Marvel xVERSE without treating it as core MCU canon.
