The Incredible Hulk

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A more grounded Marvel film than its reputation suggests — Edward Norton's Bruce Banner is a credible fugitive, and the film's interest in his isolation gives it a different register than the bombast that followed. The Abomination climax is loud and generic in the way most third acts of this era were, and the film never quite resolves the tension between wanting to be a character study and needing to be a blockbuster. Norton and Ruffalo's subsequent recasting meant this entry became quietly orphaned from the franchise it helped launch. Worth revisiting as a standalone rather than an MCU setup.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
The Incredible Hulk sits in Marvel's pre-MCU or non-MCU screen legacy, adapting comic-book characters through a separate continuity. It connects Marvel's larger history of heroes, antiheroes, and experiments in genre storytelling before the modern shared universe became dominant. Its placement helps viewers understand this title as part of the wider Marvel xVERSE without treating it as core MCU canon.
