THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Kenneth Branagh turns the fish-out-of-water premise into something more structurally interesting than it had any right to be — the Asgard sequences are genuinely strange, and Hiddleston's Loki lands as a fully drawn character from his first scene. The New Mexico half is thinner, and the romance between Thor and Jane is the weakest element the MCU had produced at that point. But the film earns its place in the franchise because it commits to its own mythology instead of apologizing for it. Ragnarok is the better film; this is the necessary one.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Thor belongs to Marvel's wider screen history, outside a single clean continuity unless the record clearly connects it to the MCU. It adapts familiar Marvel characters through its own branch of superhero, fantasy, or action storytelling. Its placement helps viewers understand how this title fits the broader Marvel xVERSE while keeping separate continuities from being blended together.
THE NEXUS TRIGGER
Post-credit connections to the broader multiverse
Loki survived his plunge into the abyss and is manipulating Selvig to secure the Tesseract, leading directly into the plot of The Avengers.
