Guardians of the Galaxy
July 30, 2014 in theaters
A ragtag crew of intergalactic misfits — a wisecracking Earthling, a green-skinned assassin, a literal-minded warrior, a talking raccoon, and a sentient tree — reluctantly unite to stop a genocidal Kree fanatic from destroying a planet. The MCU's cosmic chapter begins here.

James Gunn was fired then rehired to direct this film -- a saga that shaped the entire Guardians trilogy.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
James Gunn takes five characters nobody outside comics knew and makes them feel like old friends inside two hours — that's a harder trick than it looks, and the film pulls it off with a confidence that disguises the craft underneath. The ensemble dynamic works because each character has a distinct register, the 1970s needle drops are deployed with genuine feeling rather than nostalgia bait, and Rocket is the franchise's best non-human character. It doesn't take the MCU seriously, which turns out to be exactly what the MCU needed at that point. One of the two or three genuine discoveries the franchise produced.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Guardians of the Galaxy sits in the MCU's Phase 2, adding a specific character, team, or conflict to Marvel's connected timeline. It connects its central story with the larger consequences shaping the Avengers-era world and later saga developments. Its placement helps viewers follow how this entry supports the MCU's broader movement from individual origin stories toward expanding teams, cosmic stakes, and multiverse consequences.
THE NEXUS TRIGGER
Post-credit connections to the broader multiverse
Reassures the audience that Groot survived his sacrifice and is steadily growing back into his standard form.
A lighthearted pop-culture cameo introducing Howard the Duck into the cosmic margins of the MCU.
