The Defenders
August 18, 2017 on Disney+
Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are pulled together to confront the Hand — a centuries-old criminal organization with a plan that threatens New York City at its foundation. The street-level team-up event ties together the Netflix Marvel series into a single confrontation.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The Defenders had the unenviable task of making a crossover feel earned with only two fully successful solo series behind it, and it mostly manages. The four leads have genuine chemistry, and the New York street-level stakes feel appropriately scaled — this is not a world-ending threat, and the show is right to treat it that way. The Hand's mythology strains credulity, and Iron Fist remains the weak link he was in his own series. But the Murdock-Jones dynamic is sharply written, and the finale gives each character something real to lose. A functional if imperfect payoff to the Netflix street-level era.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
The Defenders belongs to Marvel's wider screen history, outside a single clean continuity unless the record clearly connects it to the MCU. It adapts familiar Marvel characters through its own branch of superhero, fantasy, or action storytelling. Its placement helps viewers understand how this title fits the broader Marvel xVERSE while keeping separate continuities from being blended together.
