Secret Invasion
June 21, 2023 on Disney+
A weary former spy director returns to Earth after discovering a clandestine invasion by a faction of shape-shifting aliens. Alongside his loyal alien ally, he must navigate a web of deep paranoia and deceit to prevent a rebel uprising from igniting a catastrophic global conflict. Trust becomes a fatal commodity as the invaders can perfectly disguise themselves as anyone, forcing the heroes to question who is actually human.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Secret Invasion had the premise to be Marvel's best espionage thriller — a paranoid infiltration story where no one can be trusted — and largely failed to deliver on it. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is given real vulnerability for the first time, and Cobie Smulders and Ben Mendelsohn bring genuine commitment to their arcs. But the pacing is erratic, the conspiracy's stakes keep shifting, and the finale resolves its tension through a single fight scene rather than through the intelligence thriller logic the premise demanded. A disappointing misuse of a genuinely strong concept.
