Donald Glover's Lando was so well-received he was immediately greenlit for his own spinoff series.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Solo is a lighter, more self-contained adventure than Star Wars films typically attempt — a heist film built around familiar mythology that succeeds more often than its troubled production history suggested it would. Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo is an honest performance that wisely avoids Harrison Ford impression territory, and Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian is the film's most confident creation. The film's real weakness is the weight of expectation: explaining Han Solo's origin in detail removes the useful ambiguity the character carried for 40 years. It works better as a standalone adventure than as a piece of essential lore.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Set between the Prequel and Original Trilogies, Solo: A Star Wars Story explores the origins of the iconic smuggler Han Solo. It connects to the larger Star Wars saga by introducing Han's first encounters with Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, establishing key relationships that influence future events. The film offers insight into the criminal underworld of the galaxy, enriching the backdrop of the Rebel Alliance's rise and providing context for Han's character evolution.
