Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

Rogue One is the most tonally distinct Star Wars film in the catalog — a war film first and a franchise entry second, with a willingness to kill its cast and honor the cost of rebellion that the main saga rarely commits to. The decision to end on sacrifice rather than victory gave the franchise something it had never attempted at scale, and the final act's arrival at the original trilogy's opening moments is still one of the series' best narrative payoffs. Its first half is uneven and introduces characters quickly, but the Scarif battle sequence earns the patience required to get there. The best of the anthology films.
