Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi

THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

The Last Jedi is the most divisive Star Wars film since the prequels and the most formally ambitious film the franchise has produced — Rian Johnson's decision to interrogate the mythology rather than celebrate it was a genuine creative risk that divided the audience it was trying to challenge. Its treatment of Luke Skywalker, its casino-planet detour, and its willingness to dispose of established lore generated debate that hasn't fully settled. What it does well — the Crait battle, the Rey-Kylo dynamic, Laura Dern's Admiral Holdo — it does with conviction. A film that tried to be more than a sequel and fractured the fanbase in the attempt.

The Last Jedi is the middle chapter of the Sequel Trilogy, continuing the saga after the fall of the Empire. It connects the journey of Rey as she hones her powers under the mentorship of Luke Skywalker, while the Resistance faces off against the formidable First Order. This film deepens the exploration of the Force and the evolving dynamics between the new and old generations, adding complexity to the ongoing battle for the galaxy's future.
